The spotlight this week in Halifax Bowling Club’s Indoor leagues focuses on Division 2 of the Wednesday Fours. Leading the way on 16 points from their 11 games played is new team Beta Blockers ( Alan Singleton, Eleanor Carney, John Crowson, Chris Lindsey). Having started playing indoor bowling last year, the four players have continued to improve their play. In a rearranged game against title challengers Fair of Face (Mary Crabtree, Paul Green, Lynda Canning, Geoff Harrison, Bronwin Bannon), Beta Blockers completed an emphatic 16-8 success. However in this week’s game against the experienced Jack High ( Pat Wright, Terry O’Brien, Stuart Coates, Ninnian Donnelly) the superior play of Jack High saw them beat Beta Blockers 13 shots to 5.
In Division 2 Beta Blockers, Jack High, Fair of Face, Knock Kelly Stars (Phil Dunderdale, I. Wade, Ken Burnett, Derek Squires), New Look (Ken Crossfield, Barbara Crompton, John Duncanson, Trevor Wilson) and Guys & Dolls (Eileen Dovernor, Ron Bax, Val Bax, Jeff Dovernor) are all in with a chance of prize money. With three games left to play the stage is set for an exciting finish to the season. There are prizes for the top three teams and the top two teams are promoted to Division 1.
Tony Riley gave a “master class” in lead bowling play in the Thursday Evening Triples as he enabled Clayton (Riley, Mel Fielding, Paul Gill) to defeat second in the table Madlams (Derek Smith, Stuart Baker, Mick Walker) by 22 shots to 8. Clayton retain their lead at the top of the table with 18 points from their 11 games played. Madlams and S.I.D. ( Steve Swallow, Mark McGorlick, Ian Ryding) are in joint second place with 14 points from their 11 games played.
Riley and his partner Paul Gill were in action in a rearranged Friday Evening Pairs game against C. Dogs (Ray Clegg, Michael Hutchinson). The game was “nip and tuck” with all four players playing to the best of their ability. Through the game C. Dogs were unlucky but Clayton managed to keep in the game. At the start of the last end Clayton held a 9-8 lead but Hutchinson bowled in a superb “shot” for the sides to finish with 9 shots each.
However C. Dogs came unstuck against Sisters (Del Haigh, Val Bax)
As with 10 minutes left to play the sides were level with 10 shots each. A single by Sisters gave them a 11-10 advantage and at the final end Sisters again scored another single shot to take the game by 12 shots to 10 and cause one of the upsets of the season.
Well done to Yorkies (Mary Barmby, Geoff Baron, Ann Ranton, Maurice Thorpe) in the Monday Afternoon Fours, who won their first game of the season with a 11-8 win against A’s & B’s (Audrey Batchelor, Bob Batchelor, Joyce Asquith, Donald Asquith).
Bob’s Kingdom (Carol Onions, David Onions, Bob Kingdon) moved off the bottom of Division 1 in the Friday Triples as a superb performance saw them beat high flying New Patacakes (Pauline Holroyd, Eric Grant, Stuart Baker) by 15 shots to 10. After nine ends New Patacakes held a 9-5 lead before Bob’s Kingdom won the next five ends to take a 15-9 advantage. This included a “5” at the 12th end. New Patacakes scored a single at the last end to make the final score 15-10.
Rabbits and Sutty’s Heroes are now in the relegation spot. Sutty’s Heroes (Doug Gordon, Peter Atherton, John Wilson) had an exciting game against third in the table G. 2 + 1 (Barbara Gee, Jimmy Bainbridge, David Gee). In a “nip and tuck” encounter the sides were level all the way through the game. Sutty’s Heroes thought they had won the game as at the 14th end they scored a “4” as the skip for G. 2 + 1, David Gee knocked the jack into the ditch but his bowl stopped “dead” and did not follow the jack into the ditch to give Sutty’s Heroes a 19-18 advantage. However at the final end, the lead player for G. 2 + 1, Barbara Gee bowled a “jack high” toucher and David Gee bowled in two more shot bowls for G. 2 + 1 to score a “3” and take the game by 21 shots to 19.
The club are now taking entries for the John Dunn Shield, a singles knock out competition and the Sheila Holbrook Pairs, a knock out pairs competition. Both competitions are played over an hour. The entry sheets are in the Indoor Bowling hall.
There is a Monday morning session from 11.00 a.m.- 12 noon for anyone wishing to have a “taster session” of indoor bowling.
