INDOOR BOWLING Spring 2019 (week 13).doc

Photo of Con McGinley. McGinley plays for Rabbits in the Monday Afternoon Fours and Division 1 of the Friday Triples. He also partners Norma Mallinson playing as Red woods in the Saturday Shield Pairs and is the lead player for Jack High in Division 2 of the Wednesday Fours. He is well known for his narrow running bowls.

One Direction (Renata Eyres, Ann Booth, Richard Booth, Eddie Eyres) and  H.L.I. ( Bea and Eric Grant) were the star teams in week 12 of Halifax Bowling Club’s Indoor leagues.

In the Monday Evening Fours, One Direction, who are playing in their first season in competitive indoor bowling were up against high flying Up the Edge (Tony Beeden, Trev Gasson, Keith Hatzer, Tom Gasson).

An excellent team performance by One Direction saw them take the lead in the early stages of the game and retain their lead all through the game until the penultimate end when Up the Edge drew level at 8 shots each with one end to play.

Renata , the lead player for One Direction bowled “shot” before Hatzer, the number three for Up the Edge removed the bowl for his team to hold shot. Richard Booth, the number 3 for Up the Edge then played a superb bowl as he bowled up into the head a yard through and ran the jack onto his wife Ann’s back bowl for the advantage to switch to One Direction. Tom Gasson, the skip for Up the Edge then tried to disturb the “head” but narrowly just failed as One Direction registered their most impressive victory by 9 shots to 8.

Renata and Eddie Eyres had reason to celebrate on the following evening in Division 2 of the Tuesday Evening pairs , as their team Bee Hives inflicted upon 46ers (Derek Finch Stewart Wright) their biggest defeat of the season. Bee Hives maintained their line and length through- out the game as they ran our 16-1 winners.

In Division 1 of the Tuesday Evening Pairs both top teams lost Little & Large (Steve Rothwell, John Beverley) lost to Bowl You Over (Tom Robertshaw, Andrew Gee) by 9 shots to 7, and Young Guns (Chloe Hirst, Frank Higgins) lost 8-6 to C. Dogs (Ray Clegg, Michael Hutchinson).

The game between Bowl You Over and leaders Little & Large was most eventful. On end 6 with the score at 5-3 to Bowl You Over, Bowl You Over were holding a “5” before Beverley sent a strong bowl into the head to move the jack and give his team a “3” to take the lead at 6-5. At the next end Little & Large were holding a “3” before a fast bowl by Gee into the head proved successful as his team finished with a “3” to move into a 8-6 advantage. The last couple of ends saw both pairs score a single as Bowl You Over ran out 9-7 winners.

H.L.I. (Bea and Eric grant) registered two most impressive performances in the Friday Evening Pairs.

In a rearranged game against the experienced T.N.T, (Peter Grant, Neil Mort), H.L.I. found themselves 13-11 down at the start of the final end, but were holding a “3” before Mort sent a strong bowl into the end and knocked one of their shots out for T.N.T. to concede a “2” and the teams to finish with 13 shots each.

In their game against title challengers M.G.M. (Marian Firth, Gordon Akroyd),  H.L.I.  continued setting a long mark which proved successful as they ran out by 22-8.

Winners of the Friday Evening Pairs, Clayton (Riley, Paul Kaye) were given quite a scare by T.N.T. (Peter Grant, Neil Mort) as in a “nip and tuck” encounter they ran out winners by 10 shots to 9. At the final end T.N.T, were holding a “5” with Kaye just one bowl to play he was instructed by his partner Riley to “Get into the head” which he did to score “shot” and give Clayton the game.
